Tree Removals
The latter being the most complicated with lowering devices, lots of ropes, pulleys, and sometimes involving zip lines, this requires immense skill & judgement.
Pollarding
This is a traditional type of tree pruning that was carried out to maintain a constant supply of wood. The Somerset Levels is probably the best place to see traditional willow pollards. This operation is somewhere between a removal and heavy pruning, nowadays it is quite often a compromise when a tree has become or is likely to become too big for its location. Rather than removing the tree the branches are removed, leaving just a trunk or a few bigger branches. It has many limitations and some trees simply can’t cope with this extreme form of pruning but when done correctly at the right time it can actively increase a tree’s life, but once cut as a pollard they need to be re-pollarded on a time cycle as they can collapse when they are very old.
Pruning
Sometimes all that is needed are a few choice branches removed either completely or just shortened. Other pruning terms are crown thinning, crown lifting, crown cleaning or deadwooding. Fruit tree pruning is itself another category altogether.
Fruit Tree Pruning
Regular pruning of your fruit trees can be beneficial in many ways, it helps to produce better quality fruit, whilst reducing disease. Over time trees can be easily trained and shaped into various styles such as “espalier” & “cordons”. Some trees are grafted onto different root stocks to control size or improve variety so the method of pruning needs to suit the trees growth & vigour.
Stump Grinding or Stump Removal
The last phase of any tree removal can be as big a task as the initial tree removal. Generally speaking most stumps can be ground out with a specialist grinder, sometimes smaller stumps can be simply pulled or winched out, in exceptional circumstances they can be dug out with an excavator but usually only in conjunction with a bigger project. We quite often chemically treat stumps just to kill them off when removal is either not necessary or practical. Some Stumps are easily transformed into bird tables, pot stands or thrones.
Hedge Trimming & Maintenance
Hedge reduction is usually a reduction in height as opposed to an all over trim, this is more often than not a heavy duty operation with the use of chainsaws . An Annual Trim is where the whole hedge is trimmed back to its previous size, using a hedge trimmer. Topiary is hedge trimming turned into an art form. We have vast experience of initiating topiary shapes and designs from peacocks to full tree pom pom pruning
Veteran Tree Management
These are usually the knarly old ones you see with bits missing or significant dead portions in corners of woodland or in farmers fields, on the what looks like its last legs. Any old tree can be classed as a veteran but more important treated like one.
Veteran trees are havens for wildlife and provide valuable niche habitats, all very valuable from environmental point of view but in a lot of cases as great historic or social importance as well. The management of these trees is understandably different and great care & consideration should be taken when administering any work to them. On the flip side some perfectly normal healthy trees can be “veteranised” to increase bio diversity and or just to enhance the aesthetics. Usual done using special cuts to mimic natural branch breaks or as we call them failures.
